Market Garden

Operation Market Garden was the largest airborne in World War 2. The plan was to flank the Siegfried line, and encircle Germany from the north. The soldiers were dropped over a period of three days, and seven miles from Arnhem.

The Allies captured some bridges, but most bridges were blown up before they could be captured. One end of the Arnhem road bridge was held by British paratroopers, but they could not capture the whole bridge. American troops crossed the river and took another bridge, but the British paratroopers were forced to abandon their position because of a German counterattack. Allied troops had to be evacuated, leaving many prisoners.
