Liberation of the Netherlands
The liberation of the Netherlands had two Canadian corps, one of which was transferred from Italy, fight to liberate the Netherlands from German control. In April, the Canadian 1st Army attacked to try and push the Germans out from the northeast of the Netherlands.
Canadians, along with the British, advanced west and liberated Arnhem through urban fighting, and pushed towards the North Sea. Canadian forces were prepared to continue the push into western Holland, but were worried the Germans would flood the country to try and stop them.
Canadians temporarily stopped the attack and a ceasefire was organized, allowing supplies to be parachuted or trucked in to give to the starving citizens. Canadians could not liberate the western part of the Netherlands until the surrender of the German forces in Holland was negotiated on May 5, three days before all of Germany’s surrendered.
